We were in Marquette for a trip between the Porkies and Pictured Rocks, so we stopped in for a flight of beers and some live music. Wow! This place is awesome. A Wednesday night in mid-September and it was packed with people hanging out and having a great time. The atmosphere was awesome and the beer was even better. We tried the Coconut Brown and loved it. Highly recommend it. The outdoor seating area is fantastic during the warmer months. If you're looking for some fun night life in Marquette, this is the place!

You've heard the U.P. has two Great Lakes, picturesque rocky cliffs, crisp fresh air, and immense natural beauty. True. But the real reason to visit? The U.P. has one of the best small craft breweries in the country. That would be Blackrocks Brewery in downtown Marquette, Michigan. From the laid back vibe, to the scenic patio, to the quaint old Victorian house setting, to the BEER; it does not get better than this. You will not be disappointed. Try anything. Unless you hate beer (and fun times), you will love Blackrocks.

The bartender was nice and I seemed to be the only non mug club member in the joint. It sounded like they have a lot of loyal locals who frequent the place. It was pretty understaffed so it took about 20 minutes for me to get a growler fill. I got a flight of beers and wasn't overly impressed. The 51K IPA was exceptional and the smoke infused beer was passable. The other two were not great. It was about what you would expect from such a small operation. If I am in the area again I might give it another try to see if the beer improves as it seemed like there were a lot of loyal customers.

House + Beer + Music = House Party. And that's what Blackrocks is like. Even the bartenders are having a good time, and there's nothing better than being at a business where the workers are happy, too. I paid on short visit here during a trip to Marquette, and enjoyed it immensely. I tasted a few of the beers and settle on the 151 IPA. It was bold and prickly with hops, and thirst-quenching. We sat at the bar, but there is also an outdoor patio in front and a nice big bright space upstairs which gives a view down to where the musicians perform. Something I have not yet seen in a brew pub is the mug club, where there's a "locker room" of private mugs, each which will give you a good German-size brew (a little extra for your money,) if you pay to join. I'd like to be the potter, 'cause his mugs are everywhere! There's no food but they are happy to show you a booklet of menus from local restaurants and you can order in. In concept and execution, it's one of the best micro-breweries I've been to.

Like beer? Like a cozy friendly spot in town where if it's your first time your treated like a long lost brother? Then BR is it in spades. My favorite part of this past weekends get away to Marquette.

A small but very cool place to have a drink outside while the weather is nice. The Grand Rabbits is a solid and refreshing beer, but I thought the Coconut Brown was phenomenal--very smooth to drink with a bit of sweetness added in. It reminded me (and compares favorably to) Maui Brewing Co.'s CoCoNut Porter. I also hear very positive things about their limited release Classic Pilsner but was unable to get a taste for myself. Blackrocks is definitely a destination for beer lovers passing through Marquette.

Great beer (Coconut Brown made me feel like I was on a body of water about 32 degrees south of there) accompanied by solid live music and a great atmosphere. Will definitely be back.

Best brewery in the Northern UP without a doubt. If you like brew, come here!! Specialty beer made with quality and infused with deliciousness. I know, I sampled a bunch of varieties and even tho I have my fave style, I liked everything in their tappers. Spaceman IPA and Lavender Wheat beers were fantastic! Wish we had room (in the car and our bellies) for a barrel of each. Building is awesome. The decor is awesome. The entertainment is awesome. Owners are cool. Nothin' more I can say. They've gotten distribution as far South as Lansing as of now. If you're from the Detroit area, you'll want this beer too!! Ask for it. Must try!!

Best brewery in the U.P. Atmosphere of the place along with the quality of the beers are some of the best I have had. The only downfall is they currently open at 4 pm most days besides the weekend. Other than that from the moment you step in the door a half hour later the place is full with patrons. I could gush about the place but you need to experience it yourself. So if in the marquette area and you enjoy beer make this a stop for sure.

The beer is out of this world. I'm not the biggest IPA fan, but their 51K is exceptional. Their Coconut Brown is the brown beer I've spend every fall and winter search for. It's smooth with a nice sweet taste. Overall, great people, great beer and great times. Cheers!

The second best brewery in Marquette. Their recent expansion has caused me to take my rating from 4 to 5 stars. The upstairs that used to be a closet sized "apparel shop", with a few sledge hammers, drywall and paint has turned into an absolutely beautiful gathering space. It gives Blackrocks easily 300% more floor space than they previously hosted. For those chilly autumn and spring days, I just love sitting outside under the heat lamps! In the summer, they have a wonderful patio with lots of tables and benches, but it fills up fast too when they have entertainment, which is quite often. A very close, comfortable beer garden feel to it. They have good beer that rotates very often so you get to experience a new brew or two each time you come in. The trouble for me is that they brew a lot of ales and very few lagers, if any. I understand that lagers take longer to ferment and their turnover is high so I can't hold that against them. For a brewery, $3.50 is not too bad for a pint of craft beer these days.

Very happy with the 51k IPA and the Petal Picker IPA. If I lived locally, I would definitely frequent this friendly cozy establishment. This UP brewery rocks!

Blackrocks, you fucking rock. So, with that, why am I not at 5*? Well, it's this damn lack of half star ratings for us lowly yelpers. I just had a feeling I was going to like Blackrocks right away as I stepped in there. The place itself is different. It used to be an old house, and while it has the house design, there is a bar in the main room. It's one of those things where you feel like you've been invited in and try some good brews while you're at it. Sounds good to me. I also like how there's heat lamps on the outside so you can have a beer there in the winter. So, what about the brews? Well, of the two that I had, I thought they were fantastic. Whenever I go somewhere new, I try not to order the IPA or Stout/Porter. I generally feel that you can get a better view of how good a brewer is when you order german or english styles. So, with that said, I made sure to get their ryetober and their smoked beer. The ryetober was really good. Somewhat marzen in style along with having the rye quality that I wanted in it. Nice! The smoked beer really impressed me. It's a hard style to do right and I thought they did a bang up job on it. Too often I come across smoked beers that are either way too heavy on the smoke or not enough, I thought they nailed it on this one. Black Rocks just seems to get it all right. It's a place that you want to hang out at and have more than just a beer. The only real downside to Blackocks is how small it is. You gotta make sure you get there early to get one of the few seats, but it's definitely worth it.

The number of microbreweries that are popping up in Michigan is getting out of control, and I love it! However, with all of these breweries coming into the brewing game, it's interesting to see how each and every one attempt to find their niche in what is becoming a very beer-heavy state. After the 2013 edition of the MI Brewers Guild U.P. Beerfest, my friend and I made our way over to Black Rocks after the festival ended. I liked the samples I got from them while I was at the beer fest so I figured it was worth a side-trip to check 'em out. Much to my surprise, I found myself wandering into a residential neighborhood and going to what looked like a college frat house, which consequently was the brewery. Who am I to judge though? I'm here for beer! When I walked we were greeted by the bar tender who informed us that they were about to close and that they were closing up shop. I told him that my friend and I were out of town and really wanted to check the place out and have a pint...his reply, "well...you guys got cash?. Indeed we did, so he invited us to sit down and have a pint with him and the other barkeep - how's that for customer service!? We talked with the barkeeps for a good hour about how they ended up where they were and why they had to close at 10pm on a Saturday...apparently the neighbors aren't too keen on the noise created from people hanging out, outside in the small biergarten area in front. In the winter they stay open later as people generally will stay inside. Speaking of inside, the place is kind of small, but is very "inviting" and makes you feel like you're right at home having a pint. Speaking of pints, the beer was quite good, I don't quite remember what I had as I had been drinking all day at the festival, but I knew that Black Rocks was legit. After we had finished our pints, Nevin our bartender invited us out with him and his crew to the Landmark Inn for a Bell's tap takeover. Again, these guys have this customer service thing down...not to mention they were pretty cool guys to hang out, talk beer, and "shoot the shit". If you're ever in Marquette visiting, hanging out, etc. this place is definitely worth seeking out for an afternoon drinking session, or an evening of, well...more drinking.

What a unique, fun atmosphere with DELICIOUS beer...! But the bartenders??? HORRIBLE!! Traveling from Wisconsin I was over the moon to finally see the brewery that my fiance has been raving about. Every time he comes up to the UP he stocks up their beer to bring home. To make a long story short....We walked into the bar on Saturday (2-22) and I had asked the bartender for a specific beer and he rolled his eyes and practically threw me two samples at me... ok??? I'm bartender. I get it. You're probably having a shitty day...but you and I both know how you should suck it up. I ignored it. Then my fiance ordered and it was the same attitude...Ignored it. He even commented how delicious the beer was right off the tap. BOY-- shouldn't have done that!! The bartender then began to argue with my fiance about the taste and how it wasn't any different... Ok... it's not. whatever. We're sorry? It was a compliment. Again-- Ignored it. Maybe 5 minutes later we were talking about the beer (my fiance and I) and the bartender chimed in again. I had it. I'm done. This is suppose to be my mini vacation and he was ruining it. I tossed him a tip (why?? I couldn't tell you) and we walked out. Unfortunately we won't be back to this establishment ever again, nor will we tell our friends about it. You're the face of this company. You should probably remember that or get out of the industry.

What an unusual location - An old house as a brewery with a taproom and you can even sit outside on the porch to enjoy your beer. Absolutely great!!! Tasting their different brews gave me the certanity to rate Blackrocks Brewery with 5 stars.

Pretty much the best brewery in the UP, I almost died after having some of their beers and listening to their owner and other playing some music outside. A pretty chill joint and a really great brewery....I wish i could get there beer in Chicago, it's one of the best!

This place is my favorite brewery, straight up. I used to live in the Twin Cities and experienced a lot of great small breweries (notably Surly was my favorite) but this place consistently has excellent beer. They never rest on their laurels- every time I go there (almost weekly at this point) the beer list is completely different, and everything I try is amazing. I heard rumors that they're moving to a larger space- that would be awesome. Although the location is charming, it's small and often crowded. Love these guys and what they do. Would recommend it to anyone with an interest in good beer.

Blackrocks is one of Marquette's hidden treasures. The renovated house turned nano brewery is a flat out good time. From the early days of "Open till empty" to the expanded brewing operations and hours, the iconic watering hole has come along way in just two years. The owners are passionate and friendly and look to be having a blast running this business. The atmosphere is excellent, but expect to stand elbow to elbow with fellow beer lovers. The beer taps change frequently and you never know what to expect from them each week. I lost track of the number of different brews that have flowed from the taps, but it has to be nearly a 100. Eight brews are on at all times and you should find something you like. I would have scored five stars, but a couple drawbacks are limited space, consistency and tap breadth. I don't know if they continue to tweak their recipes, but several brews I've enjoyed have never looked nor tasted the same as the original. At times the individual taps are too similar and although I love seeing 4 IPAs on tap, tap breadth can be improved.

20 years ago I moved from Michigan to California... where the beer is almost as good. Every few years I make my way back "home" and am pleased to find the food and drinks get better and better. Blackrocks is no exception. I swung through Marquette this summer, and stayed with my friend who conveniently lives only a few blocks from the brewery. I had quite a session and managed to taste just about all they were pouring. Impressive! Most beers were really solid, well developed, and top in class. A couple were a noble attempt at something unique. The bar is in an old house, and has a comfortable living room feel. Weather permitting, the porch is also a good option. Check out the beer taps, each handmade from a different stray piece of sports equipment: golf club, bicycle chain ring, lacrosse stick, and no bar in the UP is complete without at least one hockey stick. My visit was atypical, so I can't say much about the usual scene. I stumbled into an afterhours session with the brewers and barhands. Great guys! It may be years until I get back to Marquette, but when I do... I'm making a beeline for Blackrocks.
